“Are you sure we can pull this plan off?” I asked rather loudly while Layah’s dad pumped gas before taking the three of us to the mall.

“Shhh,” my feisty friend uttered. “My dad’s right there and he can read your lips through the glass. We went over and over and over this plan. Why does it seem like the two of you guys are wimping out on me?”

“’Cause, Layah, we’re not as tough as you,” Riana said in a mousy-toned voice as she looked out the window and saw the pretty snowfall.

Layah was right about one thing; we had gone over and over and over the plan. Her dad had picked Riana and me up, and we were heading to the mall to meet Riana’s mom, or so Mr. Golf thought. But, in reality, we weren’t going to meet any parents. The three of us were just going to hang out at the mall alone, proving to our parents once and for all that we were grown-up and that they could trust us.

Then when we were ready to go, our plan was that we were going to call Riana’s mom and ask her to come and get us. We planned to stand in front of the movie theater. Riana’s mom would think Mr. Golf wanted to go see a movie. Since Mr. Golf was planning to go see one as soon as he dropped us off, we figured we weren’t really lying to our folks; we were just sorta stretching the facts here and there. We felt this was a fail-proof idea. And I went ahead with the plan because it was all for a good cause—to prove a point that we could handle the independence.

“Don’t y’all crack on me,” Layah said as she hugged the two of us in a bear embrace.

“Ugh, that hurts,” Riana said when Layah wouldn’t let go of either of us.

“Yeah, come on, that hurts,” I said.

She finally let go and said, “Okay, I’m toughening you guys up.”

“You’re toughening them up?” her father asked, startling us when he got into the car. “Why do they need to be tougher?”

“Oh, it’s just girl talk, Dad,” Layah answered back, smiling at Riana and me because she dodged a close one.

“Are you sure your mom’s at the mall, Riana?” Layah’s dad questioned as we saw snow falling.

My friend’s eyes got wide. Layah tugged on her long hair, motioning for her to answer. Riana squirmed, not wanting to have to tell Layah’s dad something that wasn’t true.

“Maybe I should park and walk in with you guys,” Mr. Golf said as he pulled into the mall.

Riana piped up and said, “No, my mom said that she’d see us right inside. Plus, sir, your movie should be starting soon. You don’t want to miss the beginning.”

“Actually, I need to work on a case. I think I’m going to skip the movie and head on back to the house. I won’t take off until I know you’re safe inside. Layah, wave at me when you all are with Mrs.
